A few weeks ago Jome put on our third Improvisation Comedy show to a full audience! This is what we have been working on with the new class and boy did they get their initiation! The two teams excitedly crammed themselves into the “backstage” area and awaited the crowd. Representing The Real Slim Shadys were Shu, Tina, Mallee, Andrew, Jenny and Sally and for the Fabulous Leprechauns were Vicky, Inez, Tash, Chris, Caleb and Rachel.
We kicked things off with a game of Freeze (and my favourite joke – just to break the ice!) and we were not disappointed. Shu got flung around, Vicky inevitably ended up on the floor with almost everyone taking their turns to sit on her but the highlight was seeing Andrew come up to Chris from behind and start singing Unchained Melody mimicking that famous scene from Ghost. What could top that? Caleb hugging Andrew from behind singing Unchained Melody to create a three-way ghost-off. Oh, and then Inez commenting that it was the worst gay porn she’d ever seen…it had to happen folks!
After Freeze came Superheroes and this was amazing! Rachel was calmly awaiting to be given her superhero identity when an audience member shouted out “what about Twerk Girl?” The rest was history. Rachel threatened the audience member and then proceded to do the funniest twerking I have ever seen in my life! She was tasked with aiding ducklings stuck on a busy road but couldn’t stop twerking. Mallee joined her as the Crazy Cat Lady who bizarrely tried to eat the ducklings with one of the funniest expressions on her face. Then Chris came in as Captain Fashion Police, a role he was seemingly born for! Not only did he scathingly call out Rachel and Mallee’s wardrobes but he did it with a sarcastic smile. Of course we were left waiting for Andrew to save the day and it was worth seeing the look on his face when Chris gave him the moniker of Captain Drag Queen. Pause for effect. What happened next was hilarious – Andrew was reluctantly convincing and saved the day!
Next came a Jome favourite – Party Guest. We sent Sally out of the room and gave Jenny, Shu and Tina strange quirks. They had to attend Sally’s party as those characters and she had to guess who they were. Jenny as Kanye West was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. When she said to Sally, “hey, I ain’t saying she’s a gold-digger” the whole crowd lost it! Poor Shu had to be a nose-picker trying to pick Sally’s nose (audience suggestions are always weird!) and she was very subtle with it until she accosted Sally’s face! Finally, came Tina in what we all thought would be the hardest one to guess – a marble. Sally was just too good, however, no sooner had Tina rolled in Sally guessed!
Then it was Tash’s turn to host a party, she hilariously hoped they people would show up, unlike her 16th birthday. Well, she got her wish! Firstly, Caleb ran in dancing suggestively. As soon as he started taking off his shirt Tash guessed Magic Mike, leaving me with the understanding that she’s watched the movie more than once. Inez was obscure as a snail racer and was able to string Tash on for a while but it was Irish girl Vicky as a potato that stole the show. She certainly was he most sarcastic potato I’ve ever seen! Also the dawning look of realisation on Tash’s face when Vicky said “I hope you don’t have a deep fryer around here” was utterly priceless!
Of course we didn’t provide all of the jokes, after the interval we read out some of the audience’s efforts and they were marvellous!
It was then time for a story. Shu, Sally, Jenny, Vicky, Tash and Inez told the most fractured fairy tale on the planet! Shu started off in a gentle manner but it soon descended into sexual misconduct, bestiality, animal rights and of course 50 Shades of Grey fanfic. Extra points went to Jenny for giggling throughout and to Vicky for the look of horror on her face when it was her turn to continue the tale. Shu continued to surprise by taking the story down the road of a dungeon complete with animals and Inez rounded out the whole thing with her quip about sado-masochism. This was not a kid’s show!
Jome favourite, Mystery Line was next and it did not disappoint. Caleb, Chris and Rachel acted out a brilliant scene in a strip club’s toilet with Caleb smirking his way throughout! Then it was Tina, Andrew and Mallee given the dubious location of the train to Armadale. Mallee’s drunk acting was superb but it was Andrew’s disgruntled train guard that had us all laughing. “I am just like a police man except I have no power whatsoever.”
Finally, we ended on Cliffhanger. Inez started us off with 50 Shades of Our Lives and made us all wonder what she was doing with that pineapple. Vicky’s scene in The Teacher and the Taught gave us, what I think was one of the best lines of the night from Shu – “you’re like Cameron Diaz, you’re a bad teacher!” Jenny took us to Berlin, and Paris and actually all of Europe with her tapestry of accents but when Caleb started singing Frere Jacques I nearly lost it. It was Andrew’s storyline, Diahrroea Street that won the day. Coming out of the toilet after 27 years to explain the curse to his son and grandson was a brilliant plot and the finale was great!
Overall I was super proud of all of the crew and look forward to working with these guys in the new year!
